California Weekends- What to Pack for Carmel

I am off on a little getaway to Carmel to celebrate my husband"s birthday. I know, it sounds like I just went somewhere and next weekend we are going away for a family wedding as well. It's unusual that these all happened at the same time. I am however, a bit excited to get away. We are going without my kids, which is also unusual. We rarely get to do this more than once a year or so. The last time was about a year and a half ago! Truly. Life gets so crazy when your kids are older too. It's hard to find the time. But this post isn't about that. It's about what to pack!

Carmel Valley

I like, but also dread the packing for getaways because I always over-pack and end up bringing strange items from my wardrobe that rarely see the light of day. You know what I mean, those exotic items you bought in some shopping stupor where you were imagining yourself Lauren Hutton on Safari or Talitha Getty in Marrakech. Yeah, I have those pieces. I also over think it all. What do I wear to breakfast, the pool, dinner, the drive and what if I am not dressed up enough? SO much to think of. To make my life easier and possibly yours, I am going to begin a little series about what to bring on different types of jaunts. The credit for this also belongs to my pal Rachael, who suggested it. I have always loved to read anything about packing and travel. Maybe I just like dreaming of all the places I could go. I love travel more than anything.

Talitha. I have clothes like this. I so use them on my many trips to school and Target. 

Carmel is one of the most gorgeous places on the planet and I am so fortunate to live here in Northern California and be so close. When I say Carmel, I also mean the whole Monterey Peninsula area. That encompasses Carmel by the Sea, Monterey, Pacific Grove and Carmel Valley in the hills to the East. We are staying in the warm and sunny Carmel Valley, but will most likely end up at some point in the foggier and cooler town of Carmel, too. For this reason I need to pack for two climates! Seriously, I kid you not . If you don't believe me try spending a day in town here and you will see how many Carmel sweatshirts are sold to tourists. It's not unusual to see winter coats and sweaters worn here especially during summer time!! Carmel Valley, up the road about 20 minutes from Carmel is a warm wine region and not unlike Napa and Sonoma. So you really have to think before packing.

Carmel is a cosmopolitan place where people dress very well, but casual. Carmel Valley tends to be a horsier set where as Carmel by the Sea, is a little more flashy.


What to bring for a weekend in Carmel:

Skinny white jeans.

Blue jeans with cuffed hem.

 Button down white shirt, for day. Can also double a a cover-up by the pool if it's longer.

 Comfy flats. One bright pair from Tom's. Love the mesh espadrilles in red-fuschia! (I know I have a problem, but they are just so comfy!)

Flip flops for the pool. I have pair of Tory Burch that have lasted three years. For the $45 they make everything look chic. Great to wear to the spa or breakfast too.

One pair of heeled sandals for evenings when you feel like dressing up. I particularly love wedges for summer like these from Coach.

Cozy cardigan for cool days and around the room. This can be also cute paired with white jeans and cute tennis shoes on a colder day.

 Even warmer light quilted jacket or blazer to layer.

Swimsuit. I always prefer a tankini or a bikini under layers.

My favorite cover-up from Hawaii with my DKNY poppy swim suit.  I swear the suit does not look so road cone bright on!

 Cute cover-up, hat and tote for the pool. I have a wonderful light bag woven bag from Gap with sequins. It's just the right size to fold or bring extra magazines, books or my lap-top in.

A dress for dinner or dressy blouse like mine below. (Nights get really cool in Carmel and you'll most likely want to cover your legs even on summer nights.)  I'll pair this with skinny cargo pants or white jeans for night and heels. Daytime I'd add my red Tom's and rolled jeans.

At least one scarf for cooler days and to add a pop of color and flair. I like to bring two like below.

A pretty sleeveless top to layer or not if it warms up.

A nautical inspired T or sweater like mine below from H&M. Good to layer over bikinis too. I hate my middle and I live for cover-ups.

One casual skirt or shorts should the weather turn warm. One of my favorite looks is shorts and a long-sleeved T or sweater or jacket. Perfect for places by the coast where the weather can turn cool. Love this casual chic look on Kate Moss.

One handbag that you love. A bright color is fun. Maybe not too big so you can bring it to dinner too. I think it's nice if your bags and shoes are in good shape, and nice quality. They make everything else look great. You don't need expensive clothes if your shoes and bag look good.

A tunic like this one I bought a few years back. Great for by the pool or paired with white jeans and big earrings at night!

Cozy pants and soft T-shirt for lounging around the room. PJs could also work. I do like to have something cute and cozy with me to wear to breakfast without getting dressed for the day yet. No sloppy sweats, but yoga pants and a wrap sweater could work with a soft T.

Most importantly, accessories! I bring a few bracelets, wear my favorite necklace, bring a another chunky  necklace or fun earrings for night. A cute cocktail ring is always good too! It's good to have options. Sunglasses are so important and I love aviators and wayfarer styles right now.

Don't forget fashion and trashy magazines along with a great novel for the pool side (or by the fire, in Carmel!)

California Dreaming- Big Sur, Pismo and California Missions!

Last week was break for our boys from school- or as many people call it here, ski week. That is because most families take off to hit the slopes. We have had an unusually mild winter here in Northern Cal and the snow hasn't been too good up in the mountains, so we decided to road trip down South.

We had not been to California's central coast in some time. We thought it would be fun to see Pismo and Avila Beaches and check out San Louis Obispo, and the college for my engineer wannna be, Jackson. He is 13, but starting high school next year wanted to check out California Polytechnical at San Louis Obispo's famous engineering school.

Mission San Miguel.

My youngest, Griffin, is in 4th grade this year, and in California that means studying the California history and missions. Usually, you study California history all year and are assigned a mission to make a model of near the end. It's always fun to visit your mission if you can. Griffin chose San Miguel. San Miguel is pretty close, just a few hours south near Paso Robles, and a little gem in the chain of 21 missions. It was on our way down, so it was a perfect stop for us.

It was about an hour and half drive to San Miguel from home. The small town and mission are literally just off highway 101. The town in quite cute and has it's original storefronts still up from long ago. There is even an espresso stop/bakery that was converted from an old filling station and also a little pizza place we stopped for lunch. Mission San Miguel Arcangel, built in 1816, has the best preserved interior of all the missions. Most of the missions have been rebuilt at some time, but this one has not, only repaired. The church's highlights are its colorful murals and old paintings. Masses are still held here and you can light a candle outside in a special devotional area. Of the missions I have seen, this one is the most charming and pretty.



After our stop, we headed down to Pismo Beach. Pismo, for those who aren't familiar, is one of the few beaches left in United States, and the only one in California, that you can drive onto. It's got lots of dunes and goes for miles. It's pretty uncrowded this time of year, and the beaches are wide open. We stayed at a very cute place called Sandcastle Inn, right on the beach. It's small, but wonderful hotel with a cozy fireplace lobby. The staff there was nicer than The Four Seasons and that is not an exaggeration. We paid a great price for a roomy suite with a sitting area and dining room. We had a huge patio right over the beach. The make your own (disaster) waffles in the breakfast room was quite popular with the men, all three of mine. The boys also appreciated the swings right on the sand. The contest was to see who can lunge the farthest and embed glass in your foot at the same time! The beach was very nice and we found tons of sand-dollars. We liked the home-made cookies in the afternoon too. I liked the tea and coffee all day in the sunny breakfast room with fireplace.

We also drove to Avila Beach, right up the road about 5 minutes. Avila is newly redone and has a darling little beachfront with lots of new shops and restaurants. It also has a pier with a cute restaurant at the end where you can see the fish swim under you as you eat. We never did get to eat there, they were closed. Avila and Pismo are both great beaches to learn to boogie board or surf on because of their shallow break. We plan to be back in the summer to try that.

I don't know about you, but I am never a huge fan of beach restaurants. They are always over-priced and not the best and even sometimes grubby. However, on this trip we ran across a real find, Ventana Grill, in Pismo. It's gorgeous, glass-walled and modern and situated over the sea. It looks pricey, but the prices were so reasonable, food so fresh and service couldn't have been better. We liked it so much we went two nights. One thing they serve everyone is their homemade tortillas with cinnamon butter. How good does that sound? Ventana Grill calls its food coastal fusion. Whatever it is it's delicious. Lovely and wish we had one here. Don't miss this if you are down that way! They have a kids' menu too.

 Pismo is an older town, but it still has a charm seen especially in remnants of it's heyday as a vacation destination. There are so many cute little streets leading down to the many beaches. I kept thinking how cool it would be to buy one of those original cottages as a getaway. Clearly, a lot of people already had. I loved the ones with shingles and French doors.

We also made a stop in San Louis Obispo, a college town about 10 minutes inland. I didn't know much about SLO, as people call it, except that it has been voted, the happiest place in America to live. After visiting, I can clearly see why. This town is so pretty, nestled between the sea and the hills. My favorite part of the charming downtown is all the outdoor restaurants, which abound here. A river runs through it and many restaurants line the river. This is a large downtown, but it feels small. There are so many unique shops besides Pottery Barn and some large chains. I especially like the area near the San Louis Obispo Mission, which we also visited. There is a very cool outdoor cantina right across from the mission. They also have a Cornish pasties shop right here, a fantastic coffee roasting spot, and some one-of-a-kind shops. At one of these Griffin, my shopper son, bought this cute sign for his room.

Elephant seals. The best viewing time in Jan-March. 

On the way home, we took the famous Highway 1 home. We came down on 101, a quick 3 hours drive to Pismo area from the Bay Area. Highway 1 is along the Pacific the whole way and long. A LOT longer. I had forgotten. We took a quick stop in another charming spot, Cambria, then meandered up a bit more to see the elephant seals viewing area, past San Simeon. San Simeon, is home to Hearst Castle, another California landmark if you are in this area. Right past Hearst Castle we stumbled upon my favorite find of the trip, Ragged Point Inn and Restaurant. This piece of heaven on earth, came just about lunch time and so we sat outdoors and had lunch among hummingbirds and butterflies. Honestly, it was the prettiest patch of land above the ocean I have ever seen. You can also stay at this nirvana too.

After the kids explored the resort and gift shop, we hit their cappuccino bar (they also have a take-out lunch place), and continued on our way North. Here, you are at the beginning of Big Sur, which stretches a very long way, almost 90 miles from San Simeon to Carmel. The trip is scenic, but I don't think it gets really beautiful until you hit Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, where a waterfall hits the ocean, about an hour South of Carmel.

Almost there.. 

Big Sur is probably one of my most favorite spots on this earth and if you haven't seen it, you need to add it to the bucket list! There are lodges, retreats, restaurants, and art galleries that are amazing. The camping and state parks are probably the best in California. You get the mix of redwood forest, ocean and rolling oak covered hills. There is something so romantic about this empty wind-swept landscape that makes me feel like I'm worlds away from everything.
